Giving Back to Myself Through Mindful Birding

Last weekend, on 2/21/2026, I did something different.
I attended my very first mindful birding walk with Beachy Birder Adventures — and I didn’t realize how much I needed it until I was standing there, binoculars in hand, breathing in the fresh February air.

What Is Mindful Birding?

Mindful birding isn’t just identifying species or checking birds off a list. It’s slowing down. It’s tuning into sound before sight. It’s noticing subtle movement across the marsh. It’s standing still long enough for your nervous system to catch up with your body.

It’s awareness.
It’s presence.
It’s grounding.

You listen differently.
You look differently.
You breathe differently.

And in that shift, something inside settles.

My First Time

You would think that birding in the Meadowlands — so close to the city, the airport, and the Turnpike — wouldn’t feel peaceful. But it was.

The temperatures were in the upper 40s — cool overall, warm when the sun came out, and a little chilly when it tucked behind the clouds. The kind of weather that wakes you up without overwhelming you.

Watching the marsh stretch out before us, scanning for movement, spotting juvenile bald eagles and the coolest “mohawk” ducks (which absolutely matched my rock concert energy), I felt calm in a way I haven’t in weeks.

It was my first time mindful birding, but it felt completely aligned with who I am and the work I do.

As a therapist who integrates nature into healing, I talk often about slowing down, regulating the nervous system, and connecting to something bigger than ourselves. That day, I practiced what I preach — not as a guide, not as a facilitator, not as the one holding space — but as a participant.

And that mattered.

When Life Feels Like a Tornado

Lately, my life has felt like it’s spinning.

Not in a chaotic, out-of-control way — but in a driven, motivated, growth-oriented way. I am pouring energy into growing my practice. I care deeply about creating community. I love collaborating. I love giving back.

Community means so much to me.

And that day reminded me that while I give so much to community — I also need to receive from it.

I gave back to myself.

Why Nature Matters to Me

Nature has always been where I regulate. It quiets my overthinking. It challenges my anxious thoughts. It grounds me back into what is real and steady.

Birding added a new layer — deep listening. Intentional observation. Patience.

There is something profoundly humbling about standing in open air waiting for a bird to appear. You cannot rush it. You cannot control it. You can only be present.

And that presence is medicine.

A Gentle Reminder

Self-care doesn’t have to be a full day retreat.
It doesn’t have to be perfectly planned.
It doesn’t have to be extravagant.

Sometimes it’s a 2-hour walk.
Sometimes it’s 5 minutes of stepping outside and noticing the sky.
Sometimes it’s simply placing a hand on your chest and taking three slow breaths.

Whether we schedule a full day or can only spare five minutes of self-compassion — we deserve it.

That day was a full exhale for me.
A reset.
A reminder that in the midst of building, giving, and growing… I am allowed to receive.

And that might be the most important practice of all. 🌿
